dying securely?
How to disclosure information … securely.
Here is a nice looking site - securityspace.net. It looks secure enough for its customers as well. Even the name looks secure right?
But what kind of system administrator you should be if your “secure” DNS servers (yes I mean *all* of them) allow zone transfers to be performed from untrusted networks/sources:
AC 98% rusinante@sunshine:~$ host -t ns hybri*****.org
hybri*****.org name server ns4.securityspace.net.
hybri*****.org name server ns1.securityspace.net.
hybri*****.org name server ns2.securityspace.net.
hybri*****.org name server ns3.securityspace.net.
AC 98% rusinante@sunshine:~$ host -l hybri*****.org ns1.securityspace.net
Using domain server:
Name: ns1.securityspace.net
Address: 67.19.79.219#53
Aliases:hybri*****.org has address 64.34.174.25
hybri*****.org name server ns1.securityspace.net.
hybri*****.org name server ns2.securityspace.net.
hybri*****.org name server ns3.securityspace.net.
hybri*****.org name server ns4.securityspace.net.
equinox.hybri*****.org has address 66.212.144.163
files.hybri*****.org has address 70.85.109.43
ns2.hybri*****.org has address 66.232.97.2
outpost.hybri*****.org has address 70.85.109.42
qusp.hybri*****.org has address 70.86.228.130
www.hybri*****.org has address 64.34.174.25
stage.www.hybri*****.org has address 64.34.174.25
It does not matter if you are sending your zone transfer requests to ns1 or ns4 or somewhere between them. They all are “secured enough”.
With education purposes only! The author of this article confirms that this is not a break in attempt and no further actions have been taken against the above mentioned network.
Errm … Who cares!?!?! The network is a bastion and my home FreeBSD station hard drive (more precisely the /usr slice) is about to die:
unexpected soft update inconsistency mixed with ugly looking physical bad m****ing sectors/blocks that can not be repaired with FSCK but rather with a hummer.
Fortunately I will be able to copy all of the data to another HDD without data loss … someday when I have free time.
Shall I place a donate now button or I should not? I am looking for IDE66 HDD without bad blocks. 5-10GB will be enough but I am not going to refuse “bigger” offers. Of course it should come as a donation.
Is not it Christmas + New Year mixed? Of course it is … Then go gut your old workstation, cut its hard drive off and send it to me :)
Oh, I almost forgot that. If you are a real geek you can fix this one for me and for all other ill i965GM users who hate running windoors on their freedos laptops.
Happy new year and take care … all of you.
